Observations

The scientists in the group use the ground-based and spatial telescopes in order to observe galaxies in a wide range of wavelengths, ranging from the X-ray to the radio waves:
  • X: XMM-Newton, Chandra
  • UV: FUSE, GALEX, HST/STIS, HST/WFPC2
  • optical: ESO-NTT, ESO-VLT, CFHT, MEGACAM, HST/ACS
  • near IR: CFHT/WIRCAM, VLT, HST/NICMOS, DENIS
  • mid IR: ISO/ISOCAM, Spitzer, Herschel
  • far IR: ISO/ISOPHOT, Herschel
  • sub-millimeter and millimeter: SCUBA, Herschel
  • radio: VLA, ATCA, GMRT
  • These observations allow one to assess the radiative balance from the different galaxy components, and to better understand the mechanisms which have prevailed during their formation and evolution.

    A large diversity of observational techniques are used:

  • Imaging: for measuring positions and fluxes through a wavalength window
  • Slit and multi-object spectroscopy: for the spectral energy distributions and the redshifts
  • Integral field spectroscopy: for the velocity fields
