1 june 2006 The Digitized Markarian survey and the Armenian Virtual Observatory

The First Byurakan Survey (the Markarian survey) was digitized recently and the Digitized First Byurakan Survey (DFBS) database has been created. It contains some 20,000,000 low-dispersion spectra over an area of 17,000 square degrees at high galactic latitudes of the whole Northern sky and part of the Southern sky. A software for automatic classification of spectra is being created to distinguish the nature of any object present in the database and select different types of objects of interest. A DFBS catalog containing the 2D/1D spectra and all other data will be available as well. DFBS serves as a basis for the Armenian Virtual Observatory (ArVO), where users will have access to all these data together with links to other databases such as DSS, MAPS, USNO, SIMBAD, NED, and others. ArVO will maintain observations from the Byurakan 2.6m telescope as well. A number of science projects, including search for new bright QSOs and faint Markarian galaxies, optical identifications and studies of radio, IR and X-ray sources are planned.
